William “Bill” Joseph Backer, 74, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation from 10-11:00 a.m. at Mater Dei Parish-Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. Bill was born on March 12, 1951 in Sioux City, IA to Clarence and Yvette (DeMers) Backer. He graduated from East high school in 1969 and enlisted in the United States Navy the following year, serving honorably until his discharge in 1973. On October 18, 1969, he married the love of his life, Cindy Culver. Bill dedicated 32 years of his career as a resource manager with MidAmerican Energy and was a proud member of the American Legion Post 697, serving as adjutant for 18 years. He enjoyed golfing, coaching his daughter’s softball teams when they were younger, playing cards and games and spending his winters in Mesa, AZ. He was a member of Mater Dei Parish and found great joy in spoiling his grandchildren.
Bill’s legacy lives on through his wife, Cindy Backer; daughters: Amy (Corey) Sands of Greeley, CO, Carrie (Joe) McAdoo of Sioux City, IA, and Kristi (Jamie) Cole of Grimes, IA; grandchildren: Gabriel, Drake, Autumn (Anderson), Lake, and Wyatt Sands, Shelbie and Bret Uhl, and Billie Jazzlyn Cole; 13 great-grandchildren and a 14th due on his birthday this March. Bill is also survived by his siblings: Kathy (Gordon) Pynn, Sandi (Jack) Maiso, Ronda (Dan) Whitson, Mike Backer, Doug (Cindy) Backer, Sharon Klunk, Barb (Steve) Condon, and Deb Backer.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Clarence and Yvette Backer, and his great- granddaughter Oaklyn Sands.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Croix Hospice.
