Wayne M. Jensen, 88 of North Sioux City, died Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
Services 10:30 am Tuesday at the Riverside Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Military Graveside Services provided by the US Navy. Visitation 5-8 pm Monday at the church with the family present 6-8 pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service. Wayne M. Jensen was born on August 24, 1922 in Shelby County, near Fiscus, Iowa. He was the son of Magnus and Martha (Nelson) Jensen. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Peterson on September 4, 1946. She passed away in 1989. He was then united in marriage to Doris James later in 1989.
Wayne served in the Navy during WWII as a signalman with the armed guard, and served in the Pacific Theater. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and farmed for about ten years. He served on the Shelby County Soil conservation Board as a commissioner for several terms.
Wayne left the farm and moved to Sioux City in 1962 where he worked as a carpenter until retiring in 1984. He then moved to North Sioux City. He then accepted the position as Building Inspector for the City of North Sioux City. During the years, he served on the City Council, Planning and Zoning, Parks and Recreation Board. Wayne was a charter member of both the Dakota Valley Fire District Board and the North Sioux City Lions Club. He served on various volunteer committees for the community.
Wayne was a member of the Riverside Lutheran Church, the VFW, DAV and the South Dakota Building Officials.
Wayne is survived by his wife Doris, 5 children, Valerie Fort of Superior, WY, Larry Jensen of Denver, CO, Kendall Jensen and his wife Teresa of WA, Tommy Jensen of Superior, WY and Terri and her husband Bob Thurlow of Denver, CO; a sister, Verlee Shupe of Harlan, IA; a brother, Harvey Jensen of State College, PA; and 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Kathy, two brothers, Dale and Howard Jensen, and one grand-daughter, Miranda Jensen.
