Vito Salvador Dattolico, a lifelong resident of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on the 7th day of August, 2025, at the age of 91. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. The burial will be private with no visitation.
Born and raised in Sioux City, Vito attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and Central High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, dedicating 16 months of his 2-year service as part of the Honor Guard in La Rochelle, France. He was honorably discharged on March 31, 1961.
Vito's career in the railroad industry began with The Great Northern Railroad, which later merged into Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). Over his 44 year career, Vito progressed through various roles, including section man, switchman, switchman foreman, brakeman, and eventually yardmaster. His dedication to his work was matched by his commitment to his colleagues. Vito served as a union chairman, where he was deeply respected for his efforts to protect the rights and jobs of his coworkers. He also held the position of General Secretary-Treasurer for the United Transportation Union (UTU), where his integrity and commitment to equality left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Vito was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty L. Dattolico; his children: Carmen Kruger (Cary), Frankie Dattolico, Danny Dattolico (Rhonda), and Steven Vito Dattolico; 9 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his beloved dog, Snickers. His devotion to his family, work ethic, and unshakable loyalty will be remembered fondly by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Vito was preceded in death by his father, Frank Dattolico; mother, Biagina Virginia Dattolico; brothers: Anthony Dattolico (Sally), and Sebastian Dattolico (survived by Marge); and his granddaughter, Mindy Dattolico.
