Obituary

Todd Harris “Hawk” Hawthorne, 61 of Harrisburg, South Dakota formally of Hinton, Iowa, passed away Friday, January 20, 2023, at a Sioux City hospital of an unforeseen vascular event. Services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Todd was born August 9, 1961, in Weirton, West Virginia to John and Coralee (Hamilton) Hawthorne. In 1968, his family moved to Sioux City, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Polly Todd on October 19, 1985. To this union four daughters and one son were born, Rachel, Megan, Katie, Jessie and Jared. They lived in the Hinton area for many years before moving to Harrisburg, SD in August of 2017.

He attended North High School and graduated in 1979. After graduating from Western Iowa Tech, he went to work in the construction business. He then worked at Walgreens where he spent many years in management. He then found his place back in the construction business flipping homes. He found his passion and started his own construction company, Hawthorne Homes.

Being in the sun was Todd’s favorite way to spend time with his family. Whether it be on the golf course, relaxing in a pool in Florida, or simple grill outs with yard games. He enjoyed running and participating in Ragbrai with friends. He also enjoyed bowling most of his life and was so excited when his family caught on to this hobby. His love for football, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, was something that will never be forgotten. He was able to attend a playoff game with his family and it was the most memorable day.

Going on trips to Florida with his family was also a favorite of his. He would take many trips a year with his wife, Polly, where they would enjoy pool time, Krispy Kreme and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Then there were the trips where he took the entire family, and they would enjoy amusement parks, beaches and countless family memories.

Todd will always be remembered for the love he showed his five kids and six grandkids. He never went a moment without making sure they were having fun.

They all grew up with and will forever cherish their memories of Valley Fair, Worlds and Oceans of Fun, Adventureland, Disney World, Lego Land, Universal, Silver Dollar City, Outback Bowl and Western Towns. Along with trips to Green Lake, Palms Springs, Phoenix, Branson and several visits to Orlando.

Todd is survived by his wife of  37 years, Polly Hawthorne of Kingsley, Iowa; daughter Rachel and her husband Jimmy Yaggie of Tea, South Dakota, and their children Aubrie, Ruby and Lily; daughter Megan and her husband Kelly Schroeder of Tea, South Dakota and their children Liam and Quinn; daughter Katie Hawthorne of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and her daughter Callie; daughter Jessie Hawthorne of Harrisburg, South Dakota; and a son Jared Hawthorne of Harrisburg, South Dakota; his father and mother John and Coralee Hawthorne of Davenport, Florida; a sister Deb and husband Eric Cox of Davenport, Florida; and many cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents Thomas and Louise Hawthorne, and Jarrett and Isabelle Hamilton.
