Timothy Troy “Tim” Barber, 63, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on December 18, 2024, at a Sioux Falls hospital. A celebration of his life will be at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City at 1:00 PM on January 3rd, 2025.
Tim was born on July 6, 1961, in Sioux City, Iowa to Rex and Jeanette (Kaufmann) Barber. He graduated from North High School in 1979 and attended the University of Iowa. After college, he worked as a supervisor at John Morrell until 2001. Known to his nieces and nephews as “the ice cream man”, Tim worked at Wells Blue Bunny until his medical retirement in 2015. He was united in marriage to Patti Tieck on September 2, 2006, in Sioux City. Their constant loyal companion was Lady, the Labrador Retriever.
Tim cherished time with family. During adolescence, he spent Sunday afternoons playing multigenerational 500 games, always playing at the “big table”. An avid cribbage player, he skunked most relatives at one time or another. He taught his younger sister and other family members the game. Growing up, many family trips to Minnesota for fishing and other hijinks were enjoyed with grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and “adopted family”. When traveling, his job was driving Big Red and pulling the boat. An incurable practical joker, he often honked and waived at random strangers along the roadside. Frequently, he tipped at restaurants with $2 bills.
Tim enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing, gambling, sports cars, Kansas City Chiefs football, and all things Hawkeye. His usual attire included a Hawkeye t-shirt. He traveled to see Iowa play in the 1981 Rose Bowl. During college he jumped out of a perfectly good airplane skydiving, not once, but twice. Tim did very well playing at the local casinos. In recent years, he enjoyed multiple trips, traveling to visit family in Texas and to his sister’s family cabin in the Black Hills. Every visit to Texas required a stop at Salt Lick BBQ. He also took many trips with Patti to the lake in Minnesota.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Patti Barber; sisters: Susan Dather and Dr. Corinne (LTC Samuel) West; half-brothers: Dominic (Holly) Barber and William (Kathryn) Barber; brothers-in-law: Bruce (Debbie) Tieck and Neal (Cathy) Tieck; sisters-in-law: Jane Ross and Cheryl (Steve) Black as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and his big brother and best friend, Rex A. Barber.
