Obituary

It is with great sadness that the Bures family of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, announce the passing of Thomas J. Bures, age 61, on April 8, surrounded by his wife, Donajean, and children, Bobbi, Madeline, and Thomas.

Tom graduated from Lake Andes High School in 1980 and continued to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Business at Northern State College and Briar Cliff College graduating with honors in 1995.  Tom began working in the meat packing industry in 1987, working “the gang” up to Product Manager and Sales at John Morrell and Curly’s (Smithfield Foods) in Sioux City, Iowa, for over 32 years and most recently, Premium Iowa Pork in Hospers, Iowa.

Tom married the love of his life, Donajean, in 1985 and together had three beautiful, loving children Bobbi, Thomas, and Madeline.  Tom was a devoted Catholic and attended Nativity Catholic Parish in Sioux City, Iowa.  He lectured for many years until his illness forced him to stop. Tom loved to make people laugh and as we all know, his quick wit and sense of humor took us all off guard. Tom loved his children and was a spectacular Dad.

Tom loved taking his son Thomas hunting in South Dakota at the Full Choke Lodge and driving the Suburban.  Thomas and Tom often had breakfast dates which left nothing but great memories and fun conversation.  Tom was so proud of Thomas and his abilities as a handyman and fixer upper.

Bobbi, his oldest daughter, followed in her dad’s footsteps and chose a career in Human Resources with Smithfield Foods in Sioux City, Iowa.  Tom would rock Bobbi to sleep as a baby and sing “Golden Slumbers” by The Beatles.  Together they shared a love for music, vinyl records, and finding deals at auction sales.

Madeline surprised us with wanting to learn how to fly.  She asked her dad to come with her on her first flight with an instructor and they both had a blast.  Madeline will continue to fly to the clouds with her Dad by her side.  Tom and Madeline also loved a friendly competition during March Madness with a DQ blizzard and bragging rights as the winning prize.

Tom enjoyed hunting on the Bures family farm with his siblings and his annual fishing trip with friends.  We cannot forget to mention the beloved dogs in Tom’s life, Bruno, Jack, Mange, Buddy, Geno, and his best friend, our dear Ruby girl, who loved Tom more than anything.

Tom is survived by his wife of 38 years, Donajean, daughters Bobbi and Madeline, and son Thomas.  Brothers Frank, Ernie Ray, Richard, and sisters JoAnn, Marilyn, Helen (Babe), and Kathryn; several nieces and nephews.  Tom was greeted into heaven by his father Ernie, his mother Irene, his sister Leona, his brother Ed, and his stepsister Alona.  If we had to guess, he is joining his friends Charlie Bromander and Jim Malek for a glass of Peter Vella Burgundy with ice and a round of poker.

In lieu of flowers, Tom’s wishes are to make donations to your favorite animal shelter in his name.
