Steve J. Kohles, 69, of North Sioux City, SD, passed away September 7, 2026 at a local hospital. A funeral mass will be held Monday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m., with a rosary at 9:30 a.m. at St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church in Dakota Dunes. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Steve was born on June 9, 1957 in Omaha, NE to Melvin and Barbara Kohles. He graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School and went on to receive a degree in computers and accounting from Iowa State University in 1980. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Lensink on July 7, 1979 and were married for 47 years.
He was a bit of a workaholic. Steve worked as a CPA at various levels of multiple financial institutions and numerous board memberships for local churches, charities, and schools for 42 years while living in Aberdeen, SD. He always made time for his family taking them on trips, from Seattle to Yellowstone to Canada and Mexico. He enjoyed golfing, but his handicap was pretty high. He loved the outdoors. He took his kids on many camping excursions to the Boundary Waters, Canada, and as an active boy scout leader. He loved sports and was a huge Packers fan. He loved watching his children play their sports of choice: football, basketball, soccer, track, and hockey, but would try to avoid watching soccer if possible. He retired in 2022 and moved to North Sioux City to be closer to family in the area. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family throughout the country and exploring new locations with Marilyn and spending time in nature.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Marilyn, his children; Lt Col Matt (Rachel) Kohles, USAF pilot, Maj Nick (Meg) Kohles, USAR physician, and Maj Stephanie (Connor) Howes, USAF cardiologist and his grandchildren; Skylar, Starlet, Pericles, Zoe, and Artemis.
