Obituary

Samuel C. Hallowell, 100 of Hornick, Iowa passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021 at his home with Carol by his side. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at the Hornick United Methodist Church, with Pastor Catie Newman officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm with prayer service at 7pm Tuesday, June 1 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff.

Samuel Charles Hallowell was born May 15, 1921 in Osage City, Kansas the son of Fred and Lizzie (Satterman) Hallowell. Sam graduated from Osage City High School in 1941. Samuel entered the United States Army August 2, 1942 and served in WWII, receiving an honorable discharge on December 12, 1945. Samuel was awarded four Bronze Stars. In 1943 he was stationed at the Sioux City Army Air Base where he met Elizabeth Sas. On May 3, 1946 he married Elizabeth Sas; she passed in 2005. Sam worked at the Stock Yards as a herdsman and at Swifts Packing House. In 1949 he was injured in the explosion at Swifts. In 1951 Sam bought a farm in Hornick which he farmed.

Sam enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Hornick UMC, and American Legion Post 492 Hindman-Steele.

He is survived by his significant other, Carol Beiswenger, son, Dick (Jeanene) Hallowell, two daughters, Ida Beth (Don) Anderson, Rebecca Noel, brother, George Hallowell, daughter-in-law, Genise Hallowell, 11 grandchildren, 11great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Samuel is preceded in death by his parents, wife Elizabeth, daughter, Merrillee Hallowell, son, Samuel T. Hallowell, brother, Arlie Hallowell, sister, Elaine Jackson, and half sister, Helen Winans.
