Samantha Joann Derner, 25, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017. Services will be held 1:00 pm, Friday, January 6, 2017 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. A visitation will be held from 4-8 with family present from 6-8 and a prayer service at 7:00 pm, Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Sammie was born on August 29, 1991 in Council Bluffs, IA, the daughter of Scott Derner and Angela Reese Murray. She graduated from North High School in Sioux City in 2010 and attended Western Iowa Tech Community College for early childhood education. Sammie was currently working at Wal-Mart.

Some of Sammie's favorite things were: music, coloring mandala designs, eating at La Juanita's, willow trees, and going for car rides. Sammie was an avid Minnesota Vikings football fan and enjoyed watching The Walking Dead. She loved spending time with her friends and family, especially her boys. Sammie just loved being around people.

Survivors include her father, Scott (Elizabeth Harkness) Derner; mother, Angela (Michael) Murray, all of Sioux City; sons, Theodore "Teddy" and Nathaniel LaFave; siblings, Alexis Derner, Ivy Peterson, Charlotte Peterson, Brandon Derner, Whitney Pottebaum, and Jasmine Cutting; paternal grandparents, James and Lollie Derner; and maternal grandparents, Fred and Linda Reese, and Phil and Jo Pierce.

Sammie was preceded in death by her step-dad, Donnie Peterson.
