Rose M. Torrez, 73 of Sioux City, entered the Spirit World on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family.
Services will be held noon, Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Four Directions Community Center in Sioux City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Wake services started Sunday evening and will continue through service time Wednesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff and the Santee Sioux Wake and Burial Services.
Rose Marie Torrez (Tanka Mani Win) was born on August 24, 1941 in Sioux City, the daughter of George and Lillian (John) Torrez. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City and attended Catholic Schools.
She worked numerous jobs in the area. She was a factory worker at Zenith Corporation until its closure and most recently at 25 years at Briar Cliff University in the dining area, retiring recently due to poor health.
She was a member of the Santee Sioux Nation. Rose was a strong traditional woman who lived and walked in the Dakota cultural and ceremonial ways. She was a Pipe Carrier and Sun Dancer for many years.
Rose enjoyed being around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was known as “Grama Rose” to many. She helped raised her grandchildren, Russell, Falon and Josh and Jay Torrez. She loved to go thrift shopping with anyone and everyone.
She is survived by her daughter, Tena Torrez; her sister Jean Torrez; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Lillian Torrez, one sister, Joan LaBelle and three brothers, Raymond, Larry and Kenny Torrez, and her nephew/son Stanley “Skeeter” Torrez.
