Obituary
Ronald "Ron" Marvin Derby, 75 of Akron, died Monday, November 20, 2017 at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be held 2:00 pm, Wednesday, November 22nd at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Air Force. Visitation starts at noon with the family present at the funeral home.
Ronald Marvin Derby was born on July 22, 1942 in Sioux City, the son of Leo and Dorothy (Hansen) Derby. He graduated from South Sioux City High School and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at Wayne State College. Ron enlisted in the Iowa Air National Guard and served as a Staff Sergeant with the 185th Fighter Wing and was called to active duty in the mid 1960's and sent to Clovis, New Mexico.
Ron previously worked for IBP as an electrician and R&D equipment. Ron worked at Gateway for many years and later drove school bus in South Sioux City, NE for special needs students until 2007. In 2008, the family moved to Akron, IA and Ron became a member of Friendship Assembly of God Church in Hawarden, IA. Ron was a Ham Radio enthusiast, previously participated in many RAGBRAI bicycle events, enjoyed going for walks around Crystal Cove and Bacon Creek Park. He was an avid Nebraska Football fan, attending or watching as many games as possible. Spending time with family was the most important part of his life. Ron enjoyed many trips with his sons and created special memories together attending Nebraska football bowl games. Ron loved his grandson "Mighty" Max and learned how to care for his medical needs, he loved to snuggle Max. We are comforted in knowing he is reunited with his grandchildren and family he loved so much. Ron attended his granddaughter, Madelynn's saxophone lessons and all of her music & school events with great pride. Ron (Papa) loved to go on Maddie & Papa dates together at the park or doing homework together on the swing set. He had a great sense of humor and loved his family. Ron also enjoyed talking to his two best friends on the phone; Ed Bohlman and Jim Minear. He was always able to keep a conversation going and had the gift of gab.
Ron is survived by his wife Barbara A. Derby; two sons, Eric (Daphyne) Derby of Stanton, NE and Michael Derby of Akron, IA; one daughter, Melissa (Steve) Munsen of Akron, IA; two grandchildren, Madelynn Munsen and Christopher (Holly) Munsen; three great grandchildren, Luke and Sophi Munsen and Benjamin Carlson; and two sisters, Mary Heiden and Dianna Bradley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin grandchildren, Melody Joy and Maxwell Joel Munsen; and one sister, Judy Fredricksen.
