Rodney Shane Kuchta, cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, entered through the gates of Heaven on May 27, 2026, eternally winning an extended battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 70 years old. Born on Christmas morning, 1955, in Sioux Falls, SD, Rodney was God’s special gift to Donald James and Naomi Fay Kuchta. His life was a testament to faith, commitment, and integrity, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Rodney's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife of 46 years, Christine Marie (Foisey) Kuchta, whom he eloped with on June 6, 1980, to Elk Point, SD, before celebrating their union with a ceremony in Omaha, NE, the following day. Rodney will be lovingly remembered by his children: son Nathan (Amy) Kuchta, daughters Megan (Aaron) Rastovski and Heidi (Peng) Li. He was the proud grandfather of eight living grandchildren: Andrew and Mary Ellen Kuchta; Genevieve, Adley, and Ashten Rastovski; and Jett, Lulu, and Macy Li. Rodney's sisters, Tracey Long and Donelle (Jay) Waagmeester, along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and treasured friends, also mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant grandson, Trajan Aaron Rastovski, and brother-in-law, Scott Long.
A lifelong learner and educator, Rodney modeled the importance of learning being the first to receive the University of Nebraska first masters degree in Computer Education. He’d say his summer of “chasing dark matter” at the Livermore National Labs and a conference in Boston were definite honors. Rodney's passion for teaching took him and his family to Avon, Humphrey, Norfolk, Ogallala, North Platte and Wayne. He was particularly proud of his MathCounts and chess teams, fostering a love for learning and critical thinking in his students.
Rodney was deeply involved in his church communities, serving as a youth group leader, Sunday School teacher, and Awana leader. He cherished bible studies and was committed to attending worship and men's breakfast even in his final year, rolling down street to/from church in his wheelchair and then “resting his eyes” throughout the service. His faith in Jesus was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him through every challenge and triumph. In retirement, he served others as he delivered Meals on Wheels. An avid chess player, he was just shy of reaching master level and he’d enjoy toying with his opponent until that “gotcha” smile appeared. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing games. His quick wit and love for puns and groaners never failed to bring laughter (or groans) to those around him. A lifelong fan of the Packers, Rodney also had a soft spot for underdogs and rival teams of local favorites. He always found the most joy in spending time with his family and was so proud of his children and grandchildren who will remember his “boos” and “a-boo-fi-cas.”
The Kuchta family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Pioneer Valley Living and Rehabilitation, Hospice of the Midwest, and the church family - Harvest Church, as well as the many friends who visited and supported them during Rodney's final years. Your kindness and prayers have been more than appreciated.
Rodney Shane Kuchta's life was a blessing to all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
