Robert L. “Bob” Young, 86 of Sioux City, went home to be with his Lord, surrounded by family on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at his home.
A celebration of life Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 pm on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the First Evangelical Free Church in Sioux City with Rev. Kevin Miller officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the US Army. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.
Bob was born on November 30, 1924 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, the son of Harry and Mabel (McDanel) Young. Harry was a contractor in Washington, DC and northwestern Pennsylvania, so Bob attended 21 different schools, and at the age of 17 joined the Army Air Corps before graduating. His father received his high school diploma for him. Bob served during WWII with the 115th Airborne Unit, which was stationed in Italy. While stationed at a base in Sioux Falls, SD, he met L. June Peck at the Riverside Pool in Sioux City. They were united in marriage on February 23, 1946. For 17 years, they lived in New Brighton, Pennsylvania while Bob worked for the family’s construction company. Bob and June then moved to Sioux City where he went into business with his Air Force buddy and brother in-law Frank (Buck) Johnson to form B & B construction and later Bob Young Contractors. During 1968, Bob built over 400 homes at the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Bob built hundreds of homes in the Siouxland area before retiring in 1987.
Bob was an active member of the First Evangelical Free Church, serving on the board, teaching Sunday School, and serving as youth director alongside his wife. He also served on the board for Child Evangelism Fellowship for ten years. Bob was instrumental in building KTFC Christian radio station where he also served as a night DJ.
Bob enjoyed hunting, traveling, and exploring. During the later years of his full life he took delight in painting and carving.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, June young of Sioux City; three children, Lynette and husband Dr. Steve Anderson of Yankton, SD, Rodd and wife Mindy, and Robyn and husband Charlie Harrington, all of Sioux City; one brother, Wesley; one sister, Mary Ellen Nahar; 8 grandchildren, Heather, Brent, Robbie, Ryan, Thomas, Damon, Kymberlee and Kelli; 4 great grandchildren, Taylor, Mitchell, Hannah and Alex; and many nieces and nephews.
