Robert L. "Bingo Bob" Hanson, 91, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.
Bob was born on March 12, 1922, in Sibley, Iowa, the son of George A. Hanson and Rebecca J. (Bursell) Hanson. Bob was a veteran of World War II. He served from December 1942 to December 1945. He obtained the rank of tech corporal while serving in the Philippines, Luzon and Leyte.
In 1947, Bob married Eileen J. Mashek in South Sioux City. Two children were born of this union, Jack and Cheryl. Bob had three children from a previous marriage to Mildred Durbin, Roberta, Robert and Ronald.
Bob worked as a meat cutter (butcher) at Jack's Royal Market, and Ben's Thrifty Market. Bob left Ben's to become a business agent for Local 442 until his retirement.
Bob "Bingo Bob" worked and supervised several bingo parlors in Sioux City to include St. Joseph Catholic Church, Cathedral of the Epiphany, and Siouxland Senior Center. Bingo Bob was very proud of his efforts to establish bingo within the Siouxland area.
Survivors include a sister, Betty Desterhouse; a brother, Kenny and his wife, Gladys; a daughter, Cheryl; sons, Robert and his wife, Cathy, and Jack and his wife, Patricia; grandchildren, Carrie Jo, Lisa, Lora, Kyle, Kelly (Roberta), Kevin (Roberta), Eric, Rhonda, Ronald and Andrew; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Kalliegh, Malyssa, Miranda, Ty, Trey, Kayla, Samantha, Alissa, and Alex; and great-great-grandchildren, Marlie, James, Jacob, Zachary, Jaycee, and Aidan.
Bingo Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen; his parents; a son, Ronald; a daughter, Roberta; and five siblings.
