Ricky Lynn O’Dell “Digger” left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who loved him, passing away on Saturday, June 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A celebration of his life will be held Monday, June 16 from 5-7:00 p.m., with a time of sharing at 5:00 p.m. at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Born on January 4, 1952, in Onawa, Iowa, to Lelend and Donna O’Dell. Digger grew up in Whiting, Iowa, until the second grade, after which he embarked on a journey of discovery, moving from North Sioux City, South Dakota, to Garner, Iowa, Storm Lake, Iowa, and eventually Farmington, New Mexico, before returning to his old stomping grounds where he graduated from Whiting High School in 1970. His formative years were a testament to his resilience and adaptability.
As a young man, Digger managed the night shift at a truck stop in Garner, Iowa, and sold “Happy Humas” door-to-door, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. He also spent time at the Whiting family farm, fostering a deep connection with his grandparents, Grandma and Grandpa Kratz, and creating memories that would stay with him forever. Digger’s passion for dancing blossomed in high school, and he could often be found dancing the night away in Sac City, at Friday night dances around the Roof Garden, or at the Cobblestone.
In the early 1970s, Digger married Connie Koolman, and together they became pillars of their church community, leading Sunday school ministries and participating in musical programs like Songs of the night. With the birth of their son, Joshua, brought immense joy, although his time on earth was fleeting, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. Digger’s love for softball led to the origin of his nickname, and his enthusiasm for the sport was contagious. He also began working as a bouncer at local bars in Sioux City, Iowa, showcasing his charismatic personality. In 1974, Digger embarked on a lifelong career as a hairstylist at the Marina Inn, later opening Digger’s Silver Scissors in 1976, where he shared his gift with countless individuals, transforming not only their appearance but also their lives. His salon became a haven filled with laughter, love, and the unmistakable scent of perm.
Digger’s venture into real estate and the landlord business led to a portfolio of properties in Sioux City, Iowa, and South Sioux City, Nebraska. His marriage to Linda McCuistion marked the beginning of a new chapter, filled with travel adventures to St. Louis, and the birth of their son, Kyle O’Dell, on February 20, 1981. Digger’s subsequent marriage to Jeanne O’Dell brought forth two more beautiful souls, Ryan O’Dell and Katye O’Dell, expanding his family and heart. The 1990s brought Digger and Deb Isaacson together, sharing a decade of love, laughter, and adventure as they danced, traveled, and cherished moments with their blended family.
In 2002, Digger met his lifelong partner, Julie McManigal, and together they shared a profound love, building a life filled with joy, travel, and entrepreneurship. The opening of Digger’s Dusty Rose in Hubbard, Nebraska, was a testament to their partnership, creating a haven where friends and family could gather, share stories, and make memories. Behind the bar, Digger’s infectious smile and compassionate ear made him a beloved fixture, a true counselor to those who needed guidance.
Though his battle with mesothelioma cancer was fierce, Digger’s spirit remained unbroken, inspiring all who knew him. As a father, Digger was a guiding light, a safe haven, and a constant source of encouragement. His four children, Ryan, Kyle, Joshua, and Katye, were blessed to have him as a role model, mentor, and friend. Digger’s legacy extends far beyond his immediate family, as he touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. Though he may be gone, his memory will continue to inspire, uplift, and guide all who were fortunate enough to have known him. He was proceeded in death by his fiancée, Julie McManigal, his son, Joshua, Willard O’Dell, his grandma and grandpa Kratz, his father Lelend Jr ODell and his brother Jeff O’Dell.
   
   Survived by his loving mother Donna O’Dell, sister Rachelle O’Dell, sister Brenda Harrison (David Harrison), son Ryan O’Dell, son Kyle O’Dell (Angie O’Dell), daughter Katye Dilks (Dj Dilks) along with his grandchildren Gage Pojar, Peyton Pojar, Emma O’Dell, Ella O’Dell, Kalie O’Dell, Ellie O’Dell, Harper Dilks & Jackson Dilks and great grandson Braylen O’Dell.
  
Heartfelt gratitude to Dad’s cancer doctors, kidney doctor, family doctor, Mercy home health, Nebraska medicine medical staff, St. Luke’s medical staff, hospice team, and every single friend and family member who have selflessly stepped up to be a pillar of strength during appointments, hospital stays, and to ensure he receives the best care possible.
