A memorial service will be held Sunday July 20th at 5:00 p.m. at the Salix United Methodist Church in Salix, IA. Visitation will be from 3:30 until the service starts. Pastor Catie Newman will be officiating. Burial will be at later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Peggy was born in Sioux City, IA on October 2, 1949, to Marvin and Jeannine (Bahr) Mayberry. They lived in Waterbury, NE until February 1951, when they moved to Howard County, MO. They moved back to NE and settled on 19th Street in South Sioux City in July 1961. She started school in Glasgow, MO and attended there through the 6th grade. Glasgow is a pretty little river town set on the Missouri River, and she always marveled at how her Nebraska family lived on the same river, said it always felt right to her. She started the 7th grade at South Sioux City School and graduated from there in 1967. She was in various school activities such as library, future teachers, school paper, Pep Club, and the Junior class play. She attended all football and basketball games through the eleventh grade, and in her words – 'I didn't understand any of the plays.' In our words, she was famous for saying 'get a touchdown' while watching basketball….
Peggy met David Lee Powell in her senior year, they were married October 9, 1967 and last fall they celebrated 57 years. They lived next to Dave's parents, Lloyd and Charlotte (Sweisberger) Powell, for a few years before getting their own little piece of heaven, in June of 1974, at the 13-mile marker of Old Hwy 141. They raised their three children on that acreage, Angela, Jeff, and Nicole. In September 2014, after 40 years there, they moved to Moville.
Peggy spent her life researching her ancestors and helping anyone to find theirs. Every family vacation always included at least one stop at a cemetery, hoping to find someone 'new.' She could recite her family tree so far back, we all stopped listening after a while. She was so proud of her research and all the connections she had made over the years. It came so easily to her, she always said sometimes she felt like she interacted better with the dead than she did with the living.
Peggy worked at Interbake Foods from 1980 until 1991. Then she worked at various places, including Caseys, Texaco, Pepsi of Siouxland, The Cancer Center, and the Sioux City School District as a sub in the lunch program. Then when her mom moved in with her and Dave she stayed home to take care of her as her Alzheimer's worsened.
Over the years, she was involved with teaching Sunday School, helping at 4-H, Brownies assistant leader, Rainbow Mom, and helping in the Church fair booth at the County Fair. Proud member of the Woodbury County Genealogy Society since 1976, serving as Vice President and President. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, in South Sioux City and the Hornick American Legion Auxiliary, since 1988. She joined the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) in October 1986, after she researched and proved a direct lineage back to Daniel Boone, through the Leedom line.
