Obituary

Paul Lloyd Dunn was born on May 15, 1944 in LaMoure County, North Dakota, the son of Leo and Ludwina Dunn. Paul grew up working on the family farm with 14 other brothers and sisters. In 1963, he joined the United States Army at the age of 17 in Oaks, North Dakota where he served as a construction engineer. He operated construction equipment, bulldozing, backhoe, excavating and grading. In 1969, he was reassigned to the Army National Guard in Sioux City where he was Senior Sergeant of Transportation. Paul also worked at Wilson Trailer and maintenance for Sioux City School Board. In 1979, he was reassigned to the 185th Air National Guard where he reached the rank of Chief Master Sergeant E-9 as a Barrier Maintenance chief. His duties included basic operational maintenance, installation and deficiency reporting instructions of aircraft arresting systems. No stripe is more coveted than that of Chief Master Sergeant and is achieved by only 1% of enlisted members. He served his country for 39 years and proudly flew the American Flag at his homestead.

Paul enjoyed country living and spending time with his grandchildren. He always planted a large garden and spent a lot of his time outside.

During a winter when Katelyn and Josiah were three years old, grandpa parked the bobcat in the driveway in front of the living room picture window. The kids were standing on the couch waving at him from inside the house. Grandpa staged a fake fall as he was exiting the bobcat. He threw himself headfirst into a snowbank. The kids roared with laughter. For the next two years, he was   expected to fake slip and fall out of the bobcat in front of the picture window while they both watched. Grandpa was 62 when this stunt started.

Katelyn and Josiah don't expect an easy foot race when you are racing grandpa. He was so competitive he would push the children to win a race. Yes, grandpa would do whatever he had to do, to win the foot race. He would make snowmen and played countless hours of tetherball.

Paul could do many construction tasks like pour concrete, insulate a home, raise a garage up to put in a new foundation, install siding and shingle a house. Paul and Troy remodeled Cherrie's first home.

Paul had a personality that most people who met him would   remember him. He had a way of captivating an audience with his humor and storytelling. I call it sparkle with a little rough around the edges. I did not know you could make a vegetable radish   sandwich to eat. It was made with bread, butter and radishes from the garden. There was no need to wash the radishes first before you made the sandwich. After all if you ate radishes, it would put hair on your chest. I still do not eat radishes; I'm thinking I do not need hair on my chest. We all remember a good Ollie and Lena joke; he would tell in character. Paul was very generous and was willing to help anyone out. He was a giver.

Paul was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend. Paul's jokes, stories and laughter will be missed by many.
