Neil R. Hoover, 87 of Sioux City, died Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home after a brief illness. Services are pending for a later date with Waterbury Funeral Home of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave.
Neil graduated from East High School, and he served briefly in the US Navy Reserve before joining the US Air Force where he was a veteran of the Korean War. He started civilian life working as a Transmitter Engineer for the original KSCJ-FM and retired from NorthWestern Bell after 37 years as a Microwave Communications Engineer in 1994. Neil was highly active in earlier amateur radio activities then later was involved in building and maintaining repeater/linking systems. Several of the repeaters on the air around Sioux City today are part of the work Neil did to support technical work of repeater systems. Neil was active in amateur radio for 71 years. Neil enjoyed traveling to and was a avid geo-cashier. He estimated finding over 13,000 treasures.
Survivors include his sister; Nina Mancuso of Lake Forest, California, two Nephews and their spouses Anthony & Sandra Mancuso of San Diego, California and Michael & Leslee Mancuso of Misson Viejo California, and a niece Cathy Bertsch (Mancuso) and her husband Jeff Bertsch, of Sturgis, South Dakota and his great nephews Adam Bertsch, of Anchorage, Alaska: Tyler Bertsch Erie, of Colorado and Joseph & Tiffany Mancuso of Oceanside, California, and also dear friends Richard Larson and Sharon Stanford.
