Mona Mardell Lund-Gomez

Mona Polkinghorn Lund, 89, of Sioux City, IA, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on January 7, 2026. A memorial service will be held Monday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation 1 hour prior at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

Mona was born on September 13, 1936 in Ponca, NE; she was the sixth of nine children to Charles Ervin Polkinghorn and Versa Estelle (Green) Polkinghorn. Living siblings include: Royce (Cheryl) Polkinghorn, Colleen Reich, Yvonne Thallas, and Ron Polkinghorn.

She graduated from Ponca High School in Ponca, NE. While still in high school, Mona started her waitress career at the Star Café in Ponca, NE, then Park Plaza in SSC, NE, and finished her 50-year career retiring at the age of 76 from Gus’s Restaurant in Sioux City, IA.

Mona was united in marriage to Claire Lund in 1955 and together made their home in the Sioux land area starting a family of 7 children; Alan Lund, Jackie (Tom) Bates, Sandra (Phillip) Parmelee, Shawn Lund, Charese Lund, Kelly Lund, Kimberly (Mike) Ball.

To cherish her memory are her eight grandchildren who knew her as “Grandma Bonkey”, Shannon (Onie) Donnell, Troy Lund, Angel Wang, Corey (Chassidy) Brubaker, Jesse Brubaker, Parker Parmelee, Torri (Scott) VanZee, Conner Lund; 10 Great Grandchildren: Payton, Kolbe, Taylor, Devon, Temperence, Claira, Zoe, Eriqua, Victor, and Layla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Versa Polkinghorn; husband Claire Lund; siblings: OrlaDell Arnold, Darlene Nielsen, Bonita Michelson, Lynn Polkinghorn; in-laws: Larry Reich, Merrell Thallas, Joyce Polkinghorn, Ed Arnold, Cleone Nielsen, Paul Michelson, Dean Taubert; grandchild, Joel; and great-grandchild, Gemma.

Mom wanted to thank God for being in her life and helping her throughout all her trials.
