Obituary

Michele "Bayla" Irene Hoefer, 70, of Sioux City, IA, passed away surrounded by her family on July 14, 2025 at a local hospital.  A memorial service will be held Friday, July 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Crescent Park Global Methodist Church.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday, July 17 from 4-7:00 p.m., with a time of sharing at 6:00 p.m. at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

Michele was born on October 2, 1954 in Sioux City, IA to Kenneth and Mary (Lucart) Byrne.  She graduated from Leeds High School in 1972.  Michele was well known for working as the Taco John's manager for 25 years.  At the age of 50, she went on to get her LPN from Western Iowa Tech.  She worked as a nurse for several places in town.  She married Dennis "Mick" McKenna in 1973, to this union 2 children were born: Michael and Melissa. Michele was later united in marriage to Brent Hoefer in 2018.

She was very musically gifted, playing the flute for 2 volunteer concert bands: New Horizons Band and Anthon Community Band.  She also enjoyed doing crafts with her granddaughter and painting.  She was a member of Trimble United Methodist Church as a child and currently at Crescent Park Global Methodist Church; where she was the leader of the Women's group, Spirit Sisters.  She was also the host and part of kids ministry at New Freedom Church.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Brent Hoefer; children: Michael (Danielle) McKenna and Melissa (Emeterio) Vargas; grandchildren: Siera, Elias, and Sebastian Vargas, Aiden, Conor and Lucas McKenna; and Sadie Meattey; sisters: Vicki (Chuck) Lee, Kim (George) Davis, Cheryl (Bill) Gray, Elizabeth (Harold) Schoepfer, Kris Byrne, Kendra (Brian) Howe, and Linda Davis; 27 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; lifelong friends: Connie Traum Finley, Penny Perez, many Leeds High School friends, band and church friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crescent Park Global Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Unity Point for all of the wonderful care given to Michele.
