Mike was born Dec. 9, 1956, to Jack and Barbara (Keairns) Smith. He worked on cars from the time he could pick up a wrench until he could no longer hold one. He passed his love of cars onto his children and together they created the Smith Racing stables. Many nights were spent driving around in circles and afterwards, working on cars in between laughter and even a little bickering. Even before the dirt track racing was prominent, Mike would take the boys to Brainerd, MN to watch drag racing; anything to be near cars. He always had a special spot for the baby of the family, Jenny. She was his little girl and the apple of his eye. They shared a special bond throughout the years that couldn’t be broken by anyone. Through life, he loved his toys, and he loved to share his toys with his kids. Most kids had dogs and cats. Mike’s kids had dogs, cats, goats, chickens, peacocks, and even a pig. He was always quick on the draw when a new toy would come out, and was always first in line to buy that new CD player, DVD player, or gaming console to bring home to his family.
He enjoyed Coca-Cola Classic, football, cars, his dog, Daisy, and making people think.
Survivors include his friends, many have come and gone through the years, but all shared a part of his life; his sons Mike (Lisa) Smith and Tim (Jennifer) Smith, and his daughter Jenny Smith; their mother Trudy (Thiele) Smith; 11 grandchildren, Chance, Brooke, Ashlee, Lake, Cole, Hunter, Corbin, Hazel, Kinlee, Kaylee, and Ray Ray; 1 great grandchild, Carter; a wonderful sister, Jackie O'Neill of Lincoln, Neb; and many nieces and nephews.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents and two of the best sisters anyone could have asked for, Catherine Donnelly and Cindy Hanson (Capers).
