Michael Ryan Derby
June 6, 1982 – November 15, 2020
Michael, Mike, Mikey or Derb. As a young boy he loved Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. His favorite color was red; he loved driving his red 1996 Chevy Camaro. He enjoyed swimming in his pool and having friends over. He loved his dog Joey and even taught Joey how to pull him while he was riding his skateboard.
Mike attended South Sioux City schools. He participated in baseball and played defensive line in football. He was proud of receiving his GED without studying and took all six tests in a very short time!
Mike had various jobs including: LiteForm, Love Brothers Trucking, building and installing fences. You are able to view some fencing on Hwy 12 by Broken Kettle Grasslands. He also worked at T & S Tree Farm and had other various jobs.
He relished teasing his family and friends and was always making jokes. He enjoyed watching Impractical Jokers, South Park and The Simpsons. He was a Nebraska Husker football fan and attended many games in Lincoln, NE. Go Big Red! He never missed an opportunity to dress up like the Easter bunny, Santa and loved the Grinch. He always wanted others to be happy and had a funny sense of humor.
Michael moved to Akron, Iowa in 2008 but always considered South Sioux City his home. His father, Ronald Derby, died in 2017. His mother, Barbara, and him were in a house fire July 9, 2020. He suffered third degree burns and complications from skin grafts. Mike passed away too soon and his potential was not fully met.
One of his wishes was to "go out with a bang!" Some of his fireworks at his Celebration of Life will help complete his wish. He called his mom’s lasagna, "Lasagna from Heaven." It will be served at his Celebration of Life, Saturday July 3, 2021, 7-10pm at South Sioux City Soccer Fields.
Left to remember him; his mother Barbara A. Derby of Akron, IA, sister Melissa (Steve) Munsen of Akron, IA, brother Eric Derby, NE and numerous family and friends. Michael will be missed.
