Michael “Mike” Pickering, 66, of Sioux City, IA, passed away surrounded by his family on December 19, 2024.  Per his wishes, there will be no services.

Mike was born November 5, 1958 in Wakefield, NE to Leonard and Betty (McDonald) Pickering.  He grew up in Emerson, NE and attended school there until his father’s passing in 1974 when Mike was 15. The family then moved to Sioux City where Mike attended North High. He participated in track and was a sprinter and pole vaulter. Mike began working as soon he could and was very proud when he earned enough money to purchase his first car, a 1968 Chevy Impala. Mike was a hard worker and worked for IBP for 20 years and later Wilson Trailer for 19 years and then Bomgaars before retiring 4 years ago.

In 1984 he welcomed his daughter, Niki, and in 1989 his son, Dusty. Mike was a kind, gentle, and loving father. He supported his children with quiet wisdom and always made sure to let them know how proud he was of them.

Mike cherished his time spent with his children and granddaughters. He loved having his granddaughters over on weekends. There was no such thing as a mess at grandpa Mike’s house!  They baked countless cakes with all the sprinkles and decorations they could think of, had endless art and craft supplies, and played any and all games, including nerf wars. He especially enjoyed taking his kids and granddaughters fishing. He taught them all aspects of fishing from hunting nightcrawlers to making their own fishing weights to the perfect cast. Mike also liked to hunt and would bring his successful hunts home and teach the kids about each animal and what made it special. He also enjoyed a cold beer, a good conversation, and a laugh.

Those left to honor Mike’s memory include his children, Niki Pickering (Brandon Jent), Dusty Pickering (Becky Fischer), and granddaughters Kaia Downs, Jayci Lockamy, Aylah Jent, Monroe Jent, and Brittney Fischer. Friends, Matt Johnson and Kim Pickens. Sister, Carol Gulbronson; brothers: George Pickering (Carol), Lonnie Pickering (Lea), and Fred Pickering; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved dog Meesha, his parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother.
