E. Ewert
July 10, 1949 – November 8, 2023
Michael “Mike” Edward Ewert, 74 of Ponca, Nebraska passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. Visitation will begin at 4:00pm, November 18, 2023, at the Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave. with services following at 5:00pm.
Mike was born July 10, 1949, in Chicago, IL the son of Edward and Irene (Grzelak) Ewert. He grew up in Chicago and graduated in 1967 from Gage Park High School. After graduating, Mike enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Vietnam War and received an honorable discharge in 1971. He went on to continue his education at the University of Illinois, receiving his undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice. Mike then worked in a supervisory role at Flexonics, a metal fabrication company, until 1989 when he and his family relocated to Black River Falls, WI to own and operate a thriving supper club, The Rustic Mill, until 1992. He was then persuaded to move back to the Chicago land area and return to Flexonics. He continued to work in metal fabrication until his retirement in 2016, when he and his wife Debbie moved to Ponca, NE to be close to their grandchildren and daughter.
Mike is survived by his wife, Debbie, and two children, Ed Ewert and Stacie (Eric) Knight, his six grandchildren, Logan, Carter, Ashlyn, Ava, Lance, Taylor, and one great-grandson, Colt, other family members include his sister, Beverly (Bill) Adrian, as well as the cousins he grew up with in Chicago, who were as close as siblings, and an extended loving family including uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, and nieces. Mike also leaves behind his Marine Corps brothers, Mitchell, Chester, William, Gene, and George, and was preceded in death by Lester.
Mike impressed many with his skills in the kitchen, and was an avid hunter and fisherman, excelled at storytelling, enjoyed darts, US history, and a wide variety of music, always being played at an eardrum-bursting level. In retirement, he had no greater joy than watching his grandchildren participate in a wide variety of sports and other activities. Mike’s American Legion membership allowed him to express his love for his country.
We will carry cherished memories in our hearts always.
