Meryl K. Tieck, 65 of Sioux City, Iowa died Sunday, March 26, 2023, at her residence after a five-year battle with cancer.
Services will be held 11am Friday, March 31, 2023, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Meryl was born on January 8, 1958, in Sioux City, the daughter of William and Alice (Eastman) Koetters. She graduated from West High and received her bachelor’s degree in music education from Morningside College and went on to obtain her master’s degree from Southwest Minnesota State University, also in Music Education.
On May 10, 1986, Meryl was united in marriage to Dennis Tieck. Meryl taught music for 10 years in Winnebago and then in the Sioux City Schools until retiring in 2018.
Meryl enjoyed traveling with Dennis to the Black Hills in South Dakota and the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming. She was an avid photographer. Meryl was a talented pianist and vocalist, singing and directing church choirs over the years and performing at many weddings for friends and family. She also leveraged those talents in her career as a teacher, passing on her joy of music to many children. She found joy in creative activities, making her own jewelry and blinging up accessories. She always enjoyed finding the best places to eat in various locations. She had a sharp sense of humor which led to the uncontrollable laughter of those she loved on many occasions. Her pets were treated like royalty, provided with love, affection and many, many treats.
Meryl was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and served as Choir and Hand Bell director for several years.
Meryl is survived by her husband, Dennis Tieck, son Michael (Lynda) Tieck, daughter, Kristin (DeJuan) Tieck, three grandchildren, Grace, Elias, and Isaiah, her mother, Alice Koetters, brothers, Steve (Kathy) Koetters, Daniel Koetters, Jason (Carin) Koetters, and her sister, Jaime (Dennis) Flynn, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Koetters, brother, Matthew Koetters, sisters, Michael and Reba, and her niece, Brenna Flynn.
