Obituary

Maynard John Verdoorn, Jr, age 66, of Sioux City passed away on Saturday January 26, 2013 at a Sioux City hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday January 30, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City with Father Craig Collison officiating. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery at Jefferson, South Dakota. Visitation will begin at 4:00pm Tuesday with the family present from 6-8pm and a vigil service held at 7:00pm at the church. Maynard was born in Sioux City on June 3, 1946, the son of Maynard J. Verdoorn Sr. and Irene H. George. He attended and graduated from Sioux City schools.

Maynard worked for the Sioux City Foundry, IBP in Dakota City and Garden City Kansas before embarking on a career of 22 years working in Pascagoula, Mississippi for Northrop Grumman Shipping Yard. He retired in 2009 and returned to Sioux City.

John loved his family and enjoyed all the get to gethers. He always had a story or two to tell and always made his family laugh. Known to his family as “John Boy” and will be truly missed.

He is survived by his son Kelly Verdoorn of Sioux City, his daughters: Tammy Hunter (Jamie) of Phoenix, Arizona and Terri Lepley (Mel) of Sioux City. He is also survived by his brothers: Clarence (Peanut) and wife Rosie and Frank and his wife Kathy both of North Sioux City, S.D. , Joe and his wife Brenda and Eugene and his wife Kelly both of Sergeant Bluff, his sisters: Kristi McGregor (Doug), Donna Kearns (Robert Sr.) Mary Worden (Buggs) all of Sioux City, Laura Libby and Debra Johns of North Sioux City and Carin Stricker (Steve) of Blue Springs, Missouri. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, his eleven great-grandchildren , several nieces, and nephews, his special little buddy Riley Peterson and his special friend Louella Heggatt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his brothers: Carl, David, and Steven, and his sisters: Judy Sisk, Teresa Verdoorn, and his neice Rebecca Peterson.

In Lieu of flowers the family of Maynard requests memorials in his name be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
