Obituary

Mary L. White, 59 of Winnebago, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at a hospital in Sioux City.

Services 2 pm Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Ho-Chunk Community Center. Burial will be in Winnebago, Nebraska. Visitation Services will be after Friday at the Ho-Chunk Community Center and continue until service time Saturday. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service and the Santee Nation Wake and Burial Association.

Mary (Wambdi Duta Win) was born on July 9, 1951 in Winnebago, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Maxine (Saul) Wabasha. She graduated from high school in Winnebago, then attended the United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, North Dakota. She graduated from the Little Priest Tribal College in Winnebago.

Mary was a member of the Casey-CSSP Alliance for Racial Equity in Child Welfare; the Community Initiative for Native Children and Families; and was a pipe carrier Canupa for family, due to her strong belief in Native American Culture.

Mary is survived by her husband, Melvin; 3 sons, Larry Starr, Gary Starr and Jonathan Starr; 6 daughters, Dawn Starr, Jewell Starr, Chelsey Morales, Maxine Rice, Alysia Rice and Ramona White; 3 brothers, Billy Wabasha, Bobby Wabasha and Elroy Wabasha; 3 sisters, Carol Bearshield, Brenda Wabasha and Theresa Wabasha; and 49 grandchidlren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her son Allen Starr, two brothers, Dennis and Gary Wabasha and one grand-daughter, Larrissa Starr.
