Obituary

Mary Hughes, age 17, of Salix,Iowa died Monday evening of injuies sustained in an auto accident.
Mass of Christan Burial will be held at 10:00 am Saturday at St.Joseph Catholic Church in Salix with graveside services and military rites at 2:00 pm Saturday at Calvary Cemetery 7710 West Center Road Omaha, Nebraska.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 pm with a vigil service held at 7:00 pm at the church.
Mary was born on December 16, 1993 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was welcomed by her parents Terrance and Catherine. She attended Oakdale elementary school in Omaha until she completed the 3rd grade, when the family moved to Salix, Iowa. Mary was a junior at Westwood Community Schools in Sloan, where she planned on graduating early so she could continue her career with the Iowa Army National Guard. Mary had enlisted in the guard in December of 2010.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix.
Mary was a fun loving teenager who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She had a special love for animals, swimming, camping, and taking pictures. She was an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhusker football team.
Mary will be missed by her parents Terry and Cathy of Salix, her paternal grandfather John R. Hughes of Omaha, Nebraska. She is also survived by her boyfriend Derek Strom, her pet’s Banjo, Bo, Lillian, and Phillip.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents and her paternal grandmother.
The family requests memorials in Mary’s name be made to Freedom Park in South Sioux City, Nebraska, the Siouxland Humane Society or Westwood Community Schools.
