Mary Maxine Hammack was born on November 21, 1935, in Sioux City, Iowa the daughter of Freeman and Inez (Nave) Donovan. She grew up in the Loess Hills area, north of Sioux City and moved many times during her childhood. She was one of nine children growing up on several farms. Mary was very proud of her high school graduation accomplishment.

After graduating from Central High School, she started working at Carl Andersen Automotive, where she met Charles Hammack. They fell in love and were married May 28, 1955. Shortly after getting married, Charles got a job with Sioux City Iron Company as a salesman in the Storm Lake territory. They then moved to Storm Lake, Iowa and resided there for 6 years before moving back to Sioux City.

They had 3 children, Charles, Trudy and Tracy. She was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest child started school. Mary worked in the school system for many years until she retired.

Mary enjoyed retirement with her husband. They took many bus trips together, were part of an antique car club, and enjoyed going dancing weekly. They loved spending time with friends and family.

Mary looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren, creating many memories with them, especially in the summer when they would stay a week at a time.

Charles and Mary were married for 48 years before Charles passed in 2003. Mary moved to Morningside where she enjoyed spending time with her wonderful neighbors.

She continued to enjoy her hobbies of dancing, traveling, and volunteering at the Gospel Mission and at the Cancer Center. Mary enjoyed going to car shows with her 1953 Chevy.

Mary was an active member of the Whitfield United Methodist Church, where she volunteered for whatever was needed, including sewing the altar linens and decorating the church; she was also a current member of the Riverside United Methodist Church.

As a very caring and giving person, she enjoyed helping whomever she could. Her compassion and joy was evident in her life. She was a positive and encouraging person whom you could always count on. She was so friendly and seemed to know people wherever she went.

Mary enjoyed coordinating her outfits and dressing up for any occasion and she was known for her hats. She was full of energy and vivacious. Throughout the last years of her life, she enjoyed spending time with Earl Hilliker, who brought her great joy.

Mary is survived by her three children; Charles (Marilyn) Hammack, Trudy (Tim) Roberts, Tracy Hammack and her special partner, Gary, 13 grandchildren; Sara, Michael, Richard, Jeremy, David, Christie, Jacob, Andrew, Rachel, Daniel, Nathan, Hannah, Shannan,16 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, brother, Timothy Dovovan, the last survivor of her 8 siblings, and her friend, Earl Hilliker.
