Mark D. Counterman, age 63, of Sioux City passed away on Thursday January 16, 2014 at his residence under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Siouxland.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday January 20, 2014 at Trimble United Methodist Church in Sioux City with Pastor Martha Anderson officiating. Mr. Counterman will be cremated following the funeral service. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Mark was born in Sioux City, Iowa on August 20, 1950, the son of Carl and Bernice (Andersen) Counterman. He attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Central High School with the class of 1969. Mark honorably served his country beginning in 1969 as a member of the United States Navy. Her served a tour of duty in Viet Nam and was wounded. Mark received the Purple Heart for his injury
Mark was united in marriage with Maureen O’Shaghnessy on June 16, 1973, the couple later divorced.
Mark worked for many years as a fire dispatcher at the US Naval station located in Newport, RI. He returned to Sioux City in 1994, and was then employed by the Belle of Sioux City as a deck hand until his illness forced his retirement.
Mark enjoyed woodworking, restoring antique autos, fishing, gardening and playing golf. He loved his family and enjoyed all of the time he spent with them.
He is survived by his sons; Joseph and Michael of Sioux City, his daughter Amy Boyd of Sioux City, his ex wife Maureen of Sioux City, his brothers: Steve and his wife Karen and Guy and his wife Val, along with his six grandchildren and many nieces, nephews.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
