La Vern E Harder, age 81, of Sergeant Bluff passed away on Monday January 20, 2014 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday January 24, 2014 at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff with Rev. Roger Madden, pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites offered by the United States Navy. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-8 pm with the family present from 6-8 at Waterbury Funeral Service. La Vern was born on May 22, 1932 in Moville, Iowa the son of Edward P and Dorothy (Johnson) Harder. He attended Oto and Anthon. He then entered the United States Navy where he served his country for five years receiving a Honorable Discharge in 1953. During his service, he served on the USS Sumner Destroyer.
He was united in marriage with Hazel Ruby Schenzel on June 15, 1950 in Sergeant Bluff. Hazel preceded La Vern in death on February 18, 2007 in Sioux City.
He worked at the Sioux City Stockyards for 42 years retiring in 1995.
La Vern enjoyed playing BINGO with his friends and family.
His life will be remembered by his family which includes his two daughters:
Laverna and Holly. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two sisters: Bonnie and Donna, one brother Jim, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Hazel, two daughters: Gail and Jackie, and four brothers: Bud, Bob, Kenny, and Donnie.
La Vern will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
