IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry A.
Washburn
December 18, 1944 – January 11, 2026
Larry A. Washburn, 81, left his residence in South Sioux City on Sunday, January 11, 2026, to go be with his Lord and Savior.
Funeral services will be held 10:30a.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. Burial will be in Brule Creek Cemetery, Elk Point, South Dakota. Visitation is 4-7p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Larry Arthur Washburn was born to William and Helen (Short) Iverson on December 18, 1944, in Anthon, and later adopted by Jesse Washburn. Larry was united in marriage to Arlowene Marple on June 16, 1973.
Larry graduated from Lawton High School in 1963. He loved farming, and his first employment was as a farm hand in the area. After high school he worked at North American Manufacturing before going to Sioux Tools where he worked until 1982 (18 years). While at Sioux Tools, he served many years as President of District 162 and Local 1426 of the Machinist Union. Larry then moved his labor to Rochester Products, where he was employed until the closure of the Sioux City plant in 1993. After G.M., he worked for Midwest Power at Port Neal, drove Ready-Mix for Wilson Concrete, and baked bread for Metz. His final full-time job was at Gelita, ‘retiring’ in 2007. In retirement, Larry worked seasonally for the Nebraska Highway Department and as a driver for the Sioux City Public Schools lunch program until 2018.
Larry was a volunteer. In his 20’s he served on Civil Defense, and in his 30’s on the Dakota-Thurston Natural Resources District Board. For many years, he regularly donated whole blood to the Siouxland Blood Bank (coming one unit short of giving 16 gallons). As a member of Heartland Baptist Church Larry volunteered by rocking babies to sleep weekly in the nursery, helping with construction of their current building, coordination of a visiting youth group’s work raising the cross on the bluff above Veterans Memorial Bridge, and serving as a runner when World Changers remodeled area homes.
Larry had a good work ethic, rarely turning down overtime; but he most enjoyed being at home with his family. He liked doing things himself – from preventative maintenance on vehicles, to digging a basement by hand and doing the concrete work.
Larry is survived by his wife, Arlowene; sons, Jerrid (Shannon) Washburn and Justin (Kendra) Washburn; grandchildren, Claire, Evelyn, Lydia, Henry, Ruby, Paxson, Garrison and Sawyer; siblings, Ron Washburn, Randy (Donna) Washburn; and Leana (Lynn) Goodrich; and by Anthony Washburn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Dan Washburn, and one sister, Bonnie Powers.
