Obituary

Larry Eugene Spreng, 79, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2025 at his home surrounded with his loving family by his side.

The Celebration of Larry’s Life will be from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2025 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave, in Sioux City, Iowa with cremation to follow.

Larry was born on November 28, 1945 in Denison, Iowa, the son of Elmer and VaNetta (Quandt) Spreng. He spent his younger years in Denison and graduated from Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, IA in 1964.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Ostermyer on April 6, 1968 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sioux City. To this union, three children were born, Terri, Danny, and Cindy.

Larry overcame his handicap and worked for Jolly Time Popcorn in Sioux City and operated the machines for 34 years.

In his younger years he was an avid bowler and did upholstery that he learned from his Mom. 

He was a former member and treasurer of the Sioux City Association of the Deaf for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandkids and great grandkids, loved going to the casinos and was a huge fan of the Chiefs and Hawkeyes.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley of Sioux City; his children, Terri (John) Tilton of Sioux City, IA, Danny (Brandi) Spreng of Lawton, IA, and Cindy (Tom) Tucker of Fairplay, MO; his beloved grandchildren, Cody (Shelby) Spreng, Brittney (Andrew) Navarrete, Alex Anderson, Sean (Tia) Utterback, Collin Anderson, Hannah Gatch, Madison (Winston) Hicks, Cody (Halie) Tucker, Ali Trobaugh, and Hope DeRaad; eight great-grandchildren and one on the way; his sister Darlene O’Donnell of Omaha, NE. and brother, Rick (Lucinda) Spreng of Council Bluffs IA; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Mike; his nieces, Emmyann Frances Spreng and Julie Malm; two brothers-in-law, John O’Donnell and Tom Ostermyer, sister-in-law, Vicki Ostermyer and his favorite dog, Smokey.
