Obituary

Larry L. Kukuk Sr., 73 of Sioux City, passed away on May 17, 2023. A funeral service will be at 4:00p.m. on Saturday May 20, 2023, at Heartland Community Baptist Church, Sioux City. Visitation at the church will be at 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Larry was born on February 3, 1950, to Robert & Mary Kukuk in Sioux City, IA. He was the second of seven children. He grew up on the west side of Sioux City. During elementary school Larry’s parents moved them to California for a year and then returned to Sioux City where he continued his education and graduated from Central High School in the class of 1969. He loved playing sports, getting into mischief, and driving his roadrunner and motorcycle around town. He attended one year of college in Rochester MN.

On June 30 th , 1973, he married Sue Mahrt of Sioux City. They were married for 17 years and had three children, Larry Jr, Kris, and Maggie. Larry’s family meant everything to him. He was very protective, loyal, involved, and kept them in line. He was always there for them, offering advice, and helping them in any way he could.

He also spent many wonderful years with Linda Massey. They enjoyed dancing, going to movies, concerts, and attending their children’s activities. He always said the time spent with Linda was some of the best times of his life.

Larry spent most of his adult life in the floor covering industry. He first started working with his father at Liberty Carpets. He later worked at Carpetland USA for several years and was in charge of the commercial sales. Eventually he opened an installation company before starting his own floor covering and installation store. He worked very hard, took pride in every job, and people knew the job would be done right.

Larry has three grandsons and two granddaughters, Jaxson Wylie (9), Finn Wylie (9), Reif Wylie (7), Amelia Wylie (5), and Lou Kukuk (3months). For four of the last six years of his life, he was able to spend a lot of time with his children and grandchildren while living with them. He loved spending quality time with his kids, grandkids, and family; laughing, making them laugh, sharing his love of music and dancing, watching movies and sports with a bowl of popcorn, and eating hot fudge sundaes with nuts! He loved listening to records with Larry Jr. and having a high ball, learning how to communicate with Kris through FaceTime/Alexa, and watching Maggie become a mom. He visited Colorado on the road to California where he got to experience hiking in the mountains, flying kites with Jaxson and Finn, and spending quality time with family. During his visits to California, he got to play A LOT of golf with Kris. He became an LA Dodgers fan and experienced life with Kris and his wife Grace.

Larry is survived by his son Larry (Amy) Kukuk of Omaha, NE; son Kris (Grace) Kukuk and his granddaughter, Lou of Los Angeles, CA; daughter Maggie (BJ) Wylie of Sioux City and grandsons Jaxson, Finn, and Reif and granddaughter Amelia; brother Rob (Jeanie) Kukuk of Sioux City; sister Cathie (Bill) Mahrt of Sioux City; brother Marty (Carol) of Lincoln NE; brother Kirk (Dawn) Kukuk of Sioux City; sister Lori (Marty) Anfinson of Lawton, IA; brother Brad (Minnie) Kukuk of Sioux City and many nieces and nephews he loved dearly.
