Ken was born on August 4, 1930. He was the 12th child of John and Clara (Beck) Hoffman. Ken was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He began working at Cudahy Packing until he was drafted into the Army in 1950. He served in the 2nd Infantry Division, 38th Regiment from 1951-52. In Korea, he rose to the rank of staff sergeant as he led patrols in the Punch Bowl region and was part of three major offensives. After an Honorable Discharge, Ken attended radio and TV repair school in Kansas City. He owned and operated a repair shop on Court St. in Sioux City, while working at Zenith.
On July 1, 1962, Ken married Cherryll Cook. They made a home in the Morningside area of Sioux City and raised two children Beth Barta and Rob Hoffman.
After the closure of Zenith, he worked several skilled labor positions. He worked at Needham packing plant and Dyna-tec, where he wired standby generators. In 1976, Ken started Sioux City Precision Grinding, where he sharpened tools for local manufacturing facilities. In 1982, Ken was the head maintenance technician for the United Federal Building until he was hired on at Rochester Products/GM until his retirement in 1993.
Ken enjoyed working with his hands, whether it was to provide for his family or as a hobby. He built model airplanes, tended his many flower gardens, and worked in his wood shop. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran and in 2006, he and Cherryll transferred to Bethany Lutheran where he was actively involved in a variety of projects. Ken openly shared his faith in Jesus Christ and wanted to tell everyone, “I’m not here, I’ve gone home”.
Ken is survived by his wife Cherryll, his two children, Beth (Susan) Barta and Rob (Makaela) Hoffman, four grandchildren; Kenny (Eluvia), Brooks, McKinnley, and Ryker, and four great grandchildren; Benji, Iris, Marley, and Naomi.
