Obituary

Kay Arlene Zellmer, 73, of Sioux City, IA, passed away surrounded by her family at a local hospital on November 11, 2025. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

Kay was born on June 24, 1952 in Sioux City, IA to Alvin and Barbara (Hansen) Zellmer. She was always proud of the home farm she grew up on in Lawton, IA. She graduated from Lawton-Bronson High School in 1970 and then received her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She then went on to earn her Master's Degree in Special Education from Morningside College. Kay taught as a teacher in Australia, LeMars, Moville and Lawton. She was most recently substituting in the Sioux City Community school district. Kay was a world traveler, living in Australia and Turkey, and visiting New Zeland, Germany, Greece and Bali. She was filled with the Holy Spirit and very in tune with God. She acted as a spiritual coach and would often meditate and connect with God. She was also an ordained minister so she could further guide others.

Kay enjoyed working in her yard, sitting in her hot tub and by her fire pit, going for walks, paddle boarding at the beach in Georgia, spending time with family, and being a grandma. She was a strong, selfless, woman who loved life and was always happy. She devoted her life to helping others and will be missed by many.

Those left to honor her memory include her children: Katie Zellmer and Derek Knierim; significant other, David Owings; grandsons: Aidan and Ethan Zellmer; siblings: James Zellmer, Laurie Law, David Zellmer, Keith Zellmer, and Leann Orr.

She is preceded in death by her parents.
