IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Karen Ann
Rothe
October 27, 1954 – December 18, 2025
Karen Ann Rothe (Larsen), 71, passed unexpectedly on December 18, 2025. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation 1 hour prior at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. Burial will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery.
Karen was born on October 27, 1954, in Sioux City, Iowa, to John and Betty (Mingo) Larsen. She graduated from Central High School and earned her teaching degree from Briar Cliff University. She taught for the Catholic school system and also worked as a substitute teacher. Karen loved kids and had a natural talent for connecting with them, making learning fun and memorable.
In 1979, Karen married Charles “Charlie” Rothe and was a devoted mother to daughters Kimberly and Stephanie. She was a natural caretaker, caring for her daughter, husband, and mother during their illnesses. Karen loved fiercely, was outspoken, easygoing, and could talk to anyone. She made time for others and made them feel important. Whether through trivia games, treasure hunts, handwritten letters, or small surprises, she never forgot her friends and family. A self-described tree-hugging hippie, she also enjoyed good music, gambling, crafts, and bringing a little sunshine into everyone’s lives.
Karen is survived by her daughter, Stephanie; her partner, David LaFave, and his sons, Teddy and Nat; her siblings Jeff (Barb) Larsen, John (Lil) Larsen, Marriott, and Judy (Kenny) Irons; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charlie; her daughter, Kimberly; and her brother, Tom Larsen
Karen will be remembered fondly for the laughter and smiles she brought, her thoughtful surprises, her compassion, and her care for those she loved. Her short stature somehow contained the biggest heart and most outgoing personality, and her love will be felt long after her spark fades from our sky.
