Joseph Perry Gross, 93 of Sioux City, died Thursday, June 1, 2017. Memorial service will be held 10 am Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Grace United Methodist Church . Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the US Navy. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Sunday, with the family present 6-8 pm and the Prayer Service at 7 pm at the Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave.
Joseph P. Gross was born July 19, 1923 in Beadle County, South Dakota, the son of Joseph and Dorathea (Wipf) Gross. Joseph was raised in Beadle County. Joe graduated in 1941 from Yale High School in Yale, South Dakota. He joined the United States Navy December of 1942 becoming a First Class Signalman in WWII, receiving his honorable discharge in February of 1946. Joe graduated from Huron College with a BA in Business Administration.
Joe married Alice Walker August 26, 1951 in Huron, S.D. In 1963 Joe and Alice moved to Sioux City. Joe worked for the Valley Bank of Union County in North Sioux City, S.D. for 28 years as Assistant Vice President and manager of the bank. He retired in 1988.
He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, active in all activities of the church. He was a Charter member of the Sioux City Evenings Lion Club and received the Warren Coleman Award. Joe enjoyed playing golf, and bridge. Joe and Alice loved to travel. They had been to all 50 states, Australia, Norway, Germany and the Soviet Union. They also enjoyed taking cruise ship vacations.
Joseph is survived by his wife Alice, one daughter Carol (Dennis) Becker of Eagan, Minn., one son Richard (Dianne) Gross of Roanoke, VA., four grandchildren; John Becker, Catherine (David Savage) Becker, Joe Gross, John (Bebhinn) Gross, several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, two sisters; Verna Cleveland, Susie Tschetter, and one brother Clarence Gross.
