Joseph (Joe) Campbell, 93, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Sunrise Health Center. Services will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Avenue with Rev. Merrill Muller, retired chaplain of the 185th Air Refueling Wing officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the 185th Air Refueling Wing.
Joe was born on November 13, 1922 on the family farm south of Hanover, Illinois, the son of J. Wilson and Myrtle (Bertsch) Campbell. The family moved to Kingsley, Iowa in 1935. He graduated from high school there in 1940 and then attended Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa until he entered the Army during World War II. In 1948, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Morningside College.
Joe married Shirley M. Herbold, daughter of Oscar and Harriet Herbold, at the United Methodist Church in Moville, Iowa on October 12, 1947. Two sons, Jack and Roger, were born to this union. Shirley passed away in 1995.
Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army in January of 1943 and served with the Air Corps in the South Pacific theater until 1946. Following his discharge and return to Sioux City, he enlisted in the Air National Guard and after his graduation from college he began his 38 year career as a civilian employee with them. He was recalled to active duty with the local Air National Guard during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and retired in 1982.
He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Post 662 of the American Legion, Post 15016 of the Veteran Foreign Wars, and a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Joe enjoyed reading, traveling and his fishing trips to Canada.
He is survived by his sons and spouses, Jack and Mary of Sioux City, Iowa and Roger and Becky of Clinton, Iowa. Two grandchildren and spouses, Travis and Emily Campbell of Chicago, Illinois and David and Alyssa Arnemann of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and great grandchildren Jonas, Isaac and Eli Arnemann of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Izola Campbell of Chicago, Illinois, his very special friend, Ruby Gernhart, and nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his parents, two sisters and their spouses, Phyllis and William Banwarth and Lois and Winfred Orndorff.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. James United Methodist Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
