January 8, 1959 – April 6, 2023
Jerald L. (Jerry) Newman, 64 of Salix, Iowa passed Thursday, April 6, 2023, at a local hospital, surrounded by his family. Services will be held 10:30am Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. Burial will in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Jerry was born January 8, 1959, in Tulsa, Oklahoma the son of James and Maxine (Schleis) Newman. The family moved to Boone, Iowa in 1963, and later moved to the Siouxland area until settling in Salix, Iowa in 1967. Jerry attended the St. Joseph Catholic School in Salix and graduated from Westwood High School in 1977.
Jerry married Shirley Sherwood in February of 1984 and later divorced. In this union three children were born Tyler, Ashlee and Matthew.
Jerry worked for Chesterman’s for numerous years until his health declined in 1995. He was then disabled related to heart problems.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, wood-working and watching old Western movies. He also enjoyed watching football and was a big Minnesota Vikings fan. He loved spending time with his friends, family, and especially his grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his daughter Ashlee (Drew) Cookman, and son Matthew (Kelsie Jensen) both of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, two brothers, CDR James D. (Patty) Newman of San Diego, California, LTC Jeffrey D. (Veronica) Newman of Sacramento, California, and two sisters, Jana S. (Dave) Drew of Lawton, Iowa, and Jolene M. Newman of Salix.
Jerry is survived by 5 grandchildren, Jack, Haleigh, and Bennett Cookman, and Harper and Elliot Newman, and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jack W. Newman, and son, Tyler R. Newman.
