In Loving Memory of Janine (Jeanne) Matlock
Jeanine Matlock, 71, of Sioux City, IA, passed away surrounded by her family on February 1, 2026. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, February 7 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the South Sioux City Senior Center, in South Sioux City, NE. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Jeanne Matlock’s life was a tapestry of devotion, creativity, and quiet joy. She passed from this world surrounded by the love she spent a lifetime giving so freely.
Jeanne is survived by her two children, Carie Mahler and her husband Michel, and April Swaney and her husband, Brian, who were the center of her world, along with eleven grandchildren, Amanda, Britton (Allie), Joshua (Katie), and Montana; and Lane (Brandi), Dylan, Braden (Gracelynn), Jalin, Kaleigh, Erik, and Jermiah, and three great-grandchildren, Lena, Waylon, and Gunnar, —with two more little ones on the way who will grow up hearing stories of the remarkable woman whose legacy they inherit. She is also lovingly remembered by her loving partner, Richard Cobb, whose companionship brought her deep comfort and laughter through her later season of life.
Jeanne is further survived by her three sisters and two brothers, each of whom shared in the memories, mischief, and milestones that shaped her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Janice Hedges, whose values of kindness, hard work, and family devotion lived on so clearly in her.
Jeanne had a gift for turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. She found community and friendship in sewing with “her ladies,” a circle of women who stitched far more than fabric together—they stitched stories, support, and decades of shared life. Her hands were just as skilled in the workshop, where she shaped wood with patience and pride, creating pieces that will continue to carry her spirit forward.
But perhaps Jeanne’s greatest joy was the time she spent with her grandchildren. Every visit came with a tradition they all treasured: root beer floats, served with the kind of delight only a grandmother can give. Those simple, sweet moments became the heartbeats of her family’s memories.
Jeanne’s life was defined by love - steadfast, generous, and beautifully lived. Her family will carry her warmth with them always, in every story told, every craft made by hand, and every root beer float shared in her honor.
May her memory be a blessing and a comfort to all who knew her.
