James "Jim" Schrader, 92 of South Sioux City, Nebraska passed away Monday, January 31, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his family. Services will be held 10:00am Friday, February 4, 2022 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Dakota City. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Marines and the American Legion. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Jim was born January 10, 1930 in Pender, NE. to Henry and Louise (Brummond) Schrader. He was raised on a farm near Lyons, NE. with his older brother Henry and his younger sister Virginia. Jim was a farm hand up until he entered into active duty with the Marines on May 15, 1951 in Omaha, NE.
During his years in active service, he was stationed in Korea three times during the Korean War. He was a tank driver, a gunner, and also trained fellow Marines. His medals include: Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Korean Service Medal. Corporal (Buch Sergeant) James Schrader was honorably discharged from active duty on May 4, 1954. Thoughtout his life, until the end he remained a proud Marine.
After he was out of the service he met the love of his life, Phyllis Bowman. They were married on March 15, 1956, and remained together for 65 years. In this union they had two daughters, Patricia and Laurie. Jim provided for his family, by working at places such as Sioux Tools, New Way Drug, and Construction. He retired from the City of South Sioux City, where he worked for 21 years. In his retirement years Jim liked to do deliveries for the Hy-Vee in South Sioux City.
Jim always greeted people with a smile and made people feel at ease. He was a man of strong faith and loved helping people when and where he could. He also served and took great pride as a Chaplin for his local VFW Chapter. He found the greatest joy in spending time with his friends and family. He was a loving father and doting grandfather. Whether it was the time in which he came from or just how he was, Jim was the epitome of a gentleman and a man with honor. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis, daughter, Laurie Gardea, sister, Virginia Christoffersen, four grandchildren, Joel McNaughton, Adam McNaughton, Elena Gardea, Emily McNaughton and great grandchild, Aleea Gardea.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Patricia McNaughton, and brother, Henry (Hank) Schrader.
