Services for James D. Long, 68, of Sloan, Iowa will be 11:00 Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Skien Lutheran Church at Albaton, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the American Legion of Whiting. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff.
James David Long was born September 6, 1948, the son of Donald and Thelma (Plinske) Long in Omaha, Nebraska. He lived there until the age of eight when he moved with his family to the family farm near Whiting, Iowa. Jim graduated from Whiting High School in 1968. He continued his education at Fort Dodge Junior College on a football scholarship. Jim married Carol Hanson January 22, 1972. Together they made their home in Onawa, Iowa later moving to Whiting, Lawton and finally retiring in Sloan. Over the years, Jim farmed for himself and others, later working for Saber Communications.
Jim was a member of the VFW American Legion in Whiting. He loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He enjoyed everything about the outdoors and water activities, fishing, hunting, boating and even cutting wood.
Survivors include his wife, Carol of Sloan, IA; son, Steven (Mindy) Long of Waukee, IA, a daughter, Stefani (Rodney) Lindgren of Moville, IA; 4 grandchildren, Aidan and Axton Lindgren and Alexis and Alexander Long; a sister, Donna Dietschy of Whiting, IA; brother, Bruce (Joan) Long of Urbandale, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Brett Long, and one brother-in-law Richard Dietschy.
