Ivan D. Katzenmeier, 80 of Sioux City, Iowa passed away Saturday, September 13, 2025, at a care facility surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held 11:00am Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by the United States Army and American Legion Post 64. Visitation will be held from 4-7pm Wednesday, September 24 at the funeral home.
Born July 18, 1945, in Ellsworth, Kansas, Ivan lived with compassion and curiosity. After graduating from Ft Hays State University, he served as a combat medic in Vietnam, earning the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for heroism.
Ivan believed life was meant to be explored. He traveled to 25 countries, often building homes with Habitat for Humanity International and church missions. Professionally, he helped countless others as a public servant, always with integrity and quiet strength.
Known for his humility and dry sense of humor, Ivan preferred deeds over words. He could lighten a room with a simple joke and saw the bright side in every challenge.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years, Barbara (Strouse); his children Hans Katzenmeier (Claudette) and Kathryn Heitman (Jim); five cherished grandchildren, Dryw Heitman, Justin Heitman, Charlie Heitman, Samuel Katzenmeier, and Tovia Robuck (Nick); and many friends.
Ivan was preceded in death by his parents Alvin Sr. and Mildred, and brother, Alvin Jr.
Though Alzheimer's dimmed his days, it could never diminish his light. Ivan's love, stories, and hope live on in us.
Donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity International.
