Helen Mae Hughes, age 101 of Onawa, Iowa formerly of Sergeant Bluff passed away on Tuesday March 26, 2013 at an Onawa care facility.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 30, 2013 at 10:00am from Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff with Pastor Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will follow in the Onawa City Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Waterbury Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Helen was born in Gibson City, Illinois on March 14, 1912, the daughter of James and Catherine (Williams) Stone. She attended Sloan Schools.
She was united in marriage with Calvin G. Hughes on November 10, 1932 in Yankton, S.D. Calvin preceded her in death on March 20, 1968 in Sioux City.
Helen worked as a Custodian for a few years at Briar Cliff College before embarking on a career as a custodian for the Sergeant Bluff Community Schools retiring in 1987.
She was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff.
Helen will be missed by her family which includes her sons: Harold and his wife Dorothy Hughes of Sergeant Bluff, and Jim Hughes of Goldfield, Iowa. She is also survived by her daughter Shirley McKnight and her husband Jerry of Sioux City, her 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers: Willie, Robert, Kenneth, and Francis.
The family requests that Memorials in Helens’ name be made to the Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff.
