Helen “Roz” Evans, 102 of Sioux City, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at a local care facility.
Memorial service will be held 3:15pm Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Center 1701 West 5th Street. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Helen was born March 19, 1914 in Hillsboro, New Hampshire the daughter of Daniel and Abbie (Carter) Cole. In 1931 she graduated from Hillsboro High School and in 1936 from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts with a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science.
From 1936 till 1940 Helen worked as assistant librarian at the Plymouth Teachers College in Plymouth, New Hampshire with a starting salary of $75 per month plus room and board. In 1940 she took an exam for a government job and went to Washington D.C. where she graded papers of those who applied for positions with the U.S. Post Office till 1941. Helen worked in Libraries from 1941 until 1976 in the State Library in Concord, New Hampshire, junior high school in Meriden, Connecticut, junior-senior high school in Rochester, New Hampshire and in brand new consolidated school in Swanzey, New Hampshire. Each summer of these working years, she took a trip, traveling to Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Central America, and Mexico. Helen visited many of the provinces of Canada especially enjoying Banff and Lake Louise in Alberta, the polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba and going above the Arctic Circle. She also traveled the United States, including Alaska.
In 1976 she retired to Hillsboro, New Hampshire to the house that her parents had left to her. She married Albert Evans December 28, 1988, a high school classmate, in Sioux City, Iowa before a Judge. They traveled extensively, including going to Ireland about nine times; they saw nine of the ten most beautiful national parks, particularly enjoying Seauoia National Park in California. Al passed away on February 14, 2006.
In 2007 Helen became a resident of Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City where she was resident council president. On March 27, 2014 she celebrated her 100th birthday.
She is survived by her step son Alan (Karen) Evans of Sioux City, step daughter Kathy (Kevin) Strohm of Sioux City.
Helen is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother Warren Cole his wife Madeline, one sister Dorothy Radford her husband Harrison.
