Gwendolyn M. “Gwen” McKelvey, 86 of Elk Point, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at a care facility in Elk Point.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, S.D., with the Rev. David Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, with a Scriptural Wake Service at 6 p.m., at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday afternoon at the church. Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff is in charge of arrangements. Gwen was born on September 17, 1924 in Sioux City. She graduated from Trinity Catholic School in Sioux City. On February 8, 1941 she was united in marriage to Robert McKelvey in South Sioux City. Robert passed away in 2000.
Gwen worked for the public schools in North Sioux City and later in Jefferson, as a dietician. During her retirement ceremony, she was given an award by the Governor of South Dakota for her 33 years of service.
Gwen was a active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and had served on the church board. She also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary, active with the Senior Companion, and greatly enjoyed her Tuesday morning Woman’s Club meetings.
Gwen is survived by her three sons, Robert McKelvey and his wife Betty of Elk Point, Ron McKelvey of Jefferson and William McKelvey and his wife Donna of Jefferson; one daughter, Gladys Sayler of Jefferson; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Gladys (Flanders) Ellenson, her husband Robert, one son Danny McKelvey and one daughter, Donna Jordan.
