Gregory "Greg" Shinkunas, 73, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2025, at his home in Lawton, IA. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, November 23 from 11-3:00 p.m. at the Bronson Shelter House. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Greg was born on September.3, 1952 in Sioux City, la. to John J. and June V. Shinkunas. Greg graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1970 and went on to pursue a career in law enforcement. He first started as the town police officer in Correctionville, la. while going to WIT, obtaining his degree in law enforcement. After school he became a police officer in Sheldon, la. before being hired by The Woodbury County Sheriffs Dept., working there for 15 yrs. During that time he became a K-9 officer, being the proud handler of Max. Moving on from the county, he went to work for Long Lines Communication, Palmer Trucking, Sara Lee, part owner in a delivery business Q & S, Wilson Trailer Co., TSA at the Sioux City airport, and last but not least, security for the Woodbury County Courthouse.
Greg loved football, with the Iowa Hawkeyes being his favorite team. Also, a big racing fan, you'd find him traveling to a race or glued to the TV watching NASCAR races. And of course, he enjoyed his trips to LasVegas. Jumping in his car, heading out for a new adventure was what Greg enjoyed most. From waffles at the Waffle House in St. Joe to the coastal highway in Cali. Uncle Greg was always a welcome fixture at the family gatherings too, especially by his nieces and nephews.
Greg is survived by his brother Al Shinkunas and his wife Sherry, and his sister Paula Cornelia and her husband Jim. Also, to cherish his memory are his nieces Jamie Blatchford (Chris ), Kelly Sparks (Kurt ), Libby Moench (Joe, Nadia Shinkunas, April Shinkunas, Kallie Shinkunas, nephews Jim Cornelia (Kyndra, Alan Shinkunas (Christine), and Justin Skaff (Jenn).
Greg was preceded in death by his parents John and June, and his brothers John P. and DarylA.
