Obituary

Gertrude ‘Trudy’ Sekera, 86, of Sgt. Bluff, Iowa passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Jan. 13, 2024 at Sunrise Retirement Community.  A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 22nd from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the Longstreth/Kaler Family Farm.  Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, IA.

Per Trudy’s wishes a cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life service will be held at the family farm at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 22, 2024. Online condolences may be directed to the Waterbury Funeral Service website: waterburyfuneralserviceinc.com.

Trudy was born on Jan 24, 1937, to Rex and Gladys (Betz) Longstreth in Sgt Bluff. She grew up on a farm south of Sgt Bluff and graduated from Sgt Bluff Luton High School in 1955.

In June 1956, Trudy married Samuel Ralph Kaler. She later married Robert Sekera in Sioux City, IA. She worked at Fimco, Inc. for over 30 years and worked at Aggies Restaurant/Catering in her retirement years. She enjoyed retirement and spent time working at Aggies, going to the casino, cooking, sewing, watching westerns on TV, and spending time with her friends and family.

Trudy is survived by her children; Rexann (Marlow) Smith, Rhonda Mersch (Brian Humphrey) of Sioux City, IA;  Daniel (Stacey) Kaler of Sgt Bluff, IA; step-children, Robert (Mary) Sekera Jr of Modale, IA and Jean Ann (Sekera) Beranek of Omaha, NE. Grandchildren; Sheila (Nick) Copple of Bennington, NE, Shane (Lindsey) Smith of Satellite Beach, FL, Danny Kaler, Emily (Tom) Kennedy of Sioux City IA,  Evan Kaler, Jacen Kaler and Parker Kaler of Sgt. Bluff, IA, Shana Martinez of Millard, NE, Jason (Joanna) Beranek of Papillion, NE, Robert Sekera III (Katie) of Council Bluffs, IA, Dave Sekera of Waterloo, NE, Nic Sekera of Logan, IA and Paul Adams of Ft. Worth, TX  and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Trudy was preceded in death by her parents, sister Bonnie (Dorman) Kuykendall, brother John “Jack” (Marge) Longstreth, and her husband Robert Sekera.

Trudy’s family would like to extend a special ‘thank you’ to the Unity Point hospital staff, Sunrise Retirement Community and St. Croix Hospice for their dedicated care to Trudy in her last months of life. Any memorials can be donated to Sunrise Retirement Community or St. Croix Hospice in Trudy’s name.
