Geraldine A. "Gerri" McClendon Brown, 96, of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at her residence. Services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, May 16, 2016 at Church of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7, with rosary at 5:45 and a Vigil Service at 6:00 pm, Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Gerri was born on February 17, 1920, in Sioux City, the daughter of James and Flora (Gardner) Booth. She graduated from East High School in 1937, and received a teaching degree from Morningside College. Gerri married Marion E. "Mac" McClendon, she was widowed shortly after their marriage, due to a fatal car accident. She married Allan "Brownie" Brown and he later passed away.
Before receiving her teaching degree, Gerri worked for Sifford and Wadden Law Firm as a legal secretary. After college, she worked at various schools in Sioux City, retiring from her teaching career as an English teacher at West High School in 1985. After retirement, Gerri cared for her mother until she passed. Gerri then volunteered for Hospice of Siouxland as a grief counselor for many years. She was an active member of Church of the Nativity and was also a member of the Catholic Daughters. Gerri was an avid reader and had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. She loved literature, language, travel, and story-telling as well as spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her compassionate, accepting, and dynamic personality allowed her to touch many lives and she made a fast and lasting impression on most everyone she met.
Survivors include her children, Michael E. (Sue Barrett) McClendon of Fremont, NE and Mary Margaret Holloway of Homer, NE; grandchildren, Eric (Jodi) McClendon, Michael J. (Melanie) McClendon, Tom Holloway, Matthew (Tadhg) McClendon, Chris Holloway, and Theresa (Tanya Navin) Rachel; great grandchildren, Saniyya, Rafe, Riker, Minna, Linda, and Carolina; and many friends.
Gerri was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; siblings; infant child, Catherine Rose Brown; and son-in-law, Jeff Holloway.
